Common questions, simple answers

Everyone will find something valuable in therapy. It’s a chance to know yourself better, explore challenges, build better relationships and grow as a human. Who doesn’t need that? But if you’re finding life particularly tough, then therapy is a proven route to feeling better.

This is a big challenge for the sector. People have fixed ideas about therapy (and some of them are right) and don’t see themselves in that space. This is Shared Mile’s point of difference - practical, grown-up, straightforward, professional and serious.

We’re flexible in terms of modality (the type of therapy we use). Rather than be fixed on a particular approach, we work with you to develop a practice that feels right. There’s nothing worse than being forced into a way of working that you don’t feel comfortable with. Here, we take the time to explore and build a deep, committed therapeutic relationship. That’s where the work happens.

Okay, here goes! I would describe the work as integrative, which means a blend of different theories. These may include Carl Rogers’ Person-Centred practice, CBT, psychodynamic and Gestalt.
But this doesn’t really describe the experience, which we’ll develop together. I’m a fan of Mick Cooper’s pluralistic theory, which is a more collaborative approach to therapy and less modality-specific.

Speak to us. Get in touch via the site, we’ll get back to you and we can have a free introductory conversation. No pressure - this needs to be right for everyone involved. Therapy is a commitment and if you’re not comfortable, it won’t work.

Maybe! Sometimes therapy is difficult. Sometimes people cry. But it’s not required. Equally, you’re experiences growing up could be relevant to how you’re feeling now. Or you may have a specific, current challenge you’d rather focus on.
Leave your preconceived ideas at the door. Whatever your particular therapy looks like, it won’t be like the movies and it won’t be like anyone else’s.

Only if you consider going to the gym a sign a weakness. Or expanding your knowledge. There’s an odd idea that working on mental and emotional strength is somehow weak. Avoidance and allowing problems to infect your daily life isn’t a sign of resilience.
True strength is addressing issues, no matter how challenging - committing to the work, committing to your own growth. The opposite of weakness.

Yes. Video therapy can be very effective. The dynamic is a little different, but lots of excellent work gets done in this format. If you’re unable to come to the therapy office, are located outside Bristol (including around the world) or simply would prefer online work, get in touch.
We can also run online sessions to replace an in-person session if you’re travelling or can’t be there personally. Flexibility is fundamental to what we do - whatever works for you, works for us.

More expensive than some, yes. But with Shared Mile, you’re working with someone who has extensive career and academic experience. Someone who’s worked in the City law firm, run a business, studied law, philosophy and therapeutic counselling. Greg brings a lifetime of experience - personal and professional - to the therapy room. It’s not something every counsellor can offer.
In addition, Shared Mile works from a beautiful private office in Clifton, Bristol. On-site parking, coffee or tea if you choose. A professional, serious approach to therapy. The costs reflect this. And they are scaled to reward commitment.
